Is there much you can tell me about Gimme Some Lovin’ by the Spencer Davis Group? – L.

They already had two No 1s under their belt but the group were nonetheless under pressure to deliver another hit when rehearsals got under way in London’s Marquee Club, after When I Come Home stalled just outside the top 10 in September 1966. With a steely focus on the task in hand, the band, led by teenager Steve Winwood, rattled out Gimme Some Lovin’ in little more than an hour.

Bassist Muff Winwood recalled: “Steve had been singing, ‘Gimme some lovin’, just yelling anything. It took about an hour to write, then down the pub for lunch.”
