Waste sites overflowing

-

Huge amounts of household waste is still going to landfill in Scotland.

More than one million tonnes of waste was sent to landfill in 2016.

And the figures are only slightly better for 2017, with 1.11 million tonnes going to landfill.

Scotland has introduced a statutory ban on sending biodegradable waste to landfill, which will be enforced from the start of 2021, but council leaders say it’s unlikely that this will be achieved in time.

Richard Dixon, director of Friends of the Earth Scotland, said many councils are planning to build incinerators to reduce the amount of waste in landfill but they should focus on recycling instead.
