Another celebrity caller for Margaret
A Borders pensioner who enjoyed a surprise telephone call from Esther Rantzen has had another VIP caller.
We told last week how Margaret Laverick from Melrose enjoyed a conversation with the campaigning broadcaster a few weeks ago after praising her charity Silver Line. Now she’s also had a call from the patron of the charity, Camilla Duchess of Cornwall.
The housebound 87-yearold, who suffers from agoraphobia and finds it difficult to leave her home, joined Silver Line a few years ago and says its offered her a lifeline to beat loneliness. She told us how she thought someone was having a laugh when her caller said she was Dame Esther.
The charity provides a free, confidential helpline for older people. Margaret also takes part in group conversations twice a week thanks to the charity.
Margaret said: “I had a very pleasant conversation with Camilla. We talked about the charity and how vital it is for many elderly people. I don’t know why I was chosen to get a call from two such busy and important people. I’m only an ordinary person who takes part in the charity’s calls.”
Margaret says when she takes in part in the charity’s calls she “feels like a human being again”.
