One of our four children was a poor sleeper and it was very difficult to deal with.

You have to be firm and not allow him to spend the night in your bed.

When he comes into your room, give him a cuddle but get up and take him back to his own bed. Sit with him for a time till he calms down and then explain it’s time for sleeping.

This may not work at first but, over time, he’ll get the message.

Prepare to be exhausted for a few nights as you change the routine to which he has become accustomed.

Children are good at making up excuses for why they need mum or dad during the night.

It can range from “I’m frightened” to “I don’t feel well” to “I had a scary dream.”

For a few nights you might lose sleep, too, but he’ll get the message that mum and dad’s bed is off limits.
