Mother and child killed

An eight-year-old girl and her 33-year-old mother have died in a house fire.

Nottinghamshire Police said emergency services were called to a blaze in a house in Woodhill Road, Collingham, near Newark, at around 7am yesterday.

Five people – thought to be from the same family – were rescued from the property by firefighters, but two later died.

Chief Inspector Rich Stapleford said a five-year-old boy and a 34-year-old man remained in hospital with serious injuries, and a 53-year-old woman was led to safety and looked after at the scene.

Police believe all five people were members of the same family.
