1974 FROZEN IN TIME

-

Hearts fans will still be trying to get over the shock of Friday night’s 5-0 thumping at Livingston.

When they suffered the same scoreline at Tannadice 44 years ago, however, it came as little surprise.

The Jambos were already rooted at the foot of the old 18-team First Division after just two draws in their first six matches when they travelled to meet Dundee United.

That lack of form had cost manager Bobby Seith his job, and the maroons appeared rudderless against the rampant Tangerines.

To make matters worse, former Hearts player Tommy Traynor hit a hat-trick for United.

Doug Houston had got the ball rolling in the first minute, and teenage prodigy, Andy Gray, was also on the mark.

John Hagart became Hearts manager soon after, and steered the club to eighth place, thus qualifying for the first season of the new, 10-team Premier League.
