The Premiership’s winter shutdown still turns me cold

-

Scotland’s Premiership players have been enjoying their winter break.

Many of them have jetted off to warmer climes with their clubs.

Celtic, Aberdeen and Hibs are in Dubai, Rangers are in Tenerife and Hearts are in Spain.

Fair play to them, but I’m still not a fan of the break.

In England, the season is roaring on, the story is changing every week.

In Scotland, it has ground to a halt in the top flight.

Yes, there have been transfers – but no football.

For me, that’s rubbish – and for what?

Has the weather been bad enough that games would have been cancelled over the last fortnight?

Of course it hasn’t. Meanwhile, it’s likely that when the teams return to action, the conditions will deteriorate – and games will start piling up again.

Look at last year – the so-called Beast Fromthe East killed off the entire card.

But that didn’t arrive until March, seven weeks after the end of the winter break!

I know the players enjoy their time off.

I’ve had Sam Allardyce on my radio show, and he’s a big advocate for English football following the Scottish game’s lead.

But I’m sorry, I’m not having it.

The players should plough on come wind, rain or snow.
