Poundland now sells engagement rings. What’s the most romantic gesture you’ve given or received?

-

I met my late wife at the dancing in Glasgow in 1956. I proposed while sitting on a bench in front of Kelvingrove Art Gallery. I then had to save up to buy a ring, before asking her dad’s permission to marry his daughter.

James Thompson, East Lothian

I proposed to my wife 50 years ago. The ring cost £24 – one month’s pay. I always give my wife a kiss before I go out anywhere and a kiss on return.

Ronald James, Angus

My husband put my engagement ring on my finger on the top deck of a No 27 bus in Edinburgh. We married in 1970.

Margaret Gibb, Fife

My husband proposed 45 years ago, giving me the ring in its box, then putting it on my finger.

Lorna Smith, North Yorkshire

Arranging a holiday in Iceland for my husband’s 60th birthday. We’ve now been together almost 46 years.

Judi Martin, Aberdeenshire

My husband proposed while on leave from the Army, in his car.

Joan Fordyce, Forfar

I proposed on the beach in Jersey. I then told her to go and find my wallet, take some money and buy a ring... Who says romance is dead?

James Walker, Glenrothes

My official proposal was on the back seat of a bus. I said yes.

Susan Ireland, Kendal

I had a small box given to me, knowing it was a ring. I said I wanted what was in the box, not the box!

Anne Fletcher, Darlington

My boyfriend didn’t propose but just assumed we’d be married. He cheated before we got round to buying a ring. I gave him his marching orders!

Liz Kelly, Glasgow
