A new survey says children are shunning classic treats, so we asked our Email Jury about their top dessert dishes

“My favourite was my mum’s rice pudding. There was always an argument of who would get the ‘skin’.”

Linda Cox, Aberdeen

“The skin off homemade, oven baked rice pudding was more enjoyable than the pudding itself! I always liked my Mum’s trifle, with a good shot of sherry.”

Lorna Smith, North Yorkshire

“Custard and prunes because we didn’t get it very often.”

Ronald James, Angus

“When I was little Arctic Roll was new, and what a real treat that was – how times have changed!”

Judi Martin, Aberdeenshire

“Spotted Dick or syrup pudding would top the list. Fresh fruit in season or made into pies. During the war we were mostly limited to what we could grow. I was lucky, I lived with my grandparents on two and a half acres, with an orchard.”

Elizabeth O’regan, Lincoln

“I think rice pudding was and still is my favourite pudding. I especially love it when it’s cooked in the oven. I think it’s a comforting, filling desert which can have anything added to it, fruit, cinnamon or jam.”

Margaret Gibb, Fife

“I used to like sago. Especially during school holidays, because not many people liked it, so I got a few of their bowls of sago as my seconds.”

Norrie Mclellan, Portobello

“Knickerbocker Glory, loads of ice cream, fruit, syrup, raspberry, fresh cream, chocolate and cherry on top.”

Graham D’arcy, Glasgow

“Baked rice with a thick skin and prunes. You can’t beat it.”

James Walker, Glenrothes

“Jam roly poly and custard, the pastry one rather than the sponge. My Father used to make it and it was GOOD!”

Susan Ireland, Kendal

“Clootie dumpling as prepared by my mum. Gorgeous aroma and taste. We stirred the ingredients which included silver threepennies then gave the clootie a punch before it went into the boiling water.”

James Thompson, East Lothian
