1966 FROZEN IN TIME
News of Pele’s health issues will have saddened all football fans.
Those of a certain vintage will be reflecting on the only time the game’s greatest-ever player played on Scottish soil.
On June 25, 1966, Pele was in the Brazil side which came north to Hampden Park to prepare for the World Cup Finals on the other side of Hadrian’s Wall.
Scotland actually took the lead in the first minute through Celtic’s Steve Chalmers, only for Servilio to equalise 14 minutes later.
It was a competitive contest thereafter, and the great man didn’t take too kindly to Billy Bremner’s attempts to man-mark him.
Indeed, when the match finished 1-1, Pele refused to exchange shirts with the flamehaired Leeds United midfielder, handing his jersey to goalscorer Chalmers instead.
