HIGHLAND LEAGUE CUP SEMI-FINALS FORMARTINE 1

-

ROTHES 2 (AET)

After a turgid first 45 minutes in this Highland League Cup semifinal from last season, where both teams seemed to be dealing with the novelty of the return to action, it was the hosts who took the lead.

A well-worked move saw the ball arrive at Daniel Park and the former Cove man scored with a low drive in the 73rd minute.

Rothes levelled on 84 minutes as Ali Sutherland hit a low left footed shot from the edge of the box that left Kevin Main rooted to the spot.

That sent the game into extra time and it took Ross Jack’s side two minutes to get their noses in front. A wonderful ball from sub Ross Gunn split the United defence and Craig Cormack sweetly finished.

Formartine pushed Craig Mckeown up front late on to try and provide an aerial threat but Rothes held on to book a final berth.

The second semi-final clash takes place today at Dudgeon Park, with Buckie Thistle travelling to face tournament favourites Brora Rangers.

The Cattachs have already three games under their belt against strong SPFL opposition.

They have performed impressively in all three Betfred encounters, including a 2-2 draw with Cove Rangers on Tuesday.

With most players showing they are up to speed and all three units functioning well, Steve Mackay will be looking forward to this game with some confidence.

In contrast, the Jags have been forced to find a handful of friendlies against Junior opposition to prepare themselves for what is arguably their biggest game of the 2019-2020 season.

Despite their near impeccable record in those matches, they know this one will be a step up and will have to be mentally strong to block out the impact of the 7-0 defeat the last time these two sides met at this venue.
