Mellon backs Tangerine trio to score goals

- By Tony Haggerty SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Dundee United manager Micky Mellon believes his Tangerine trio of Lawrence Shankland, Marc Mcnulty and Nicky Clark will plunder goals for the Taysiders when they are all fully fit.

Mellon started all three for the first time in the 0- 0 draw with St Johnstone in Perth but admits he is confident the goals will soon flow for the strike force.

The stalemate ensured Dundee United held on to sixth spot in the Premiership.

Mellon said: “The talent we have up top with the front three is there for all to see and they will get fitter.

“Marc Mcnulty is not fully fit yet but he showed in spells how good he is going to be.

“Our final pass has to be better and the front three need to retain a little bit better.

“We will go into training and work with the strikers as that is how relationships are built with the right training sessions.

“You guys know the quality of that front three and it is going to click at some stage and those relationships will grow and they will all score goals.

“I will look to playing all three together moving forward if it suits and it looks like it will give us an opportunity to score goals.

“We defended our 18- yard box superbly well and we looked very solid.

“We work very hard on the defensive side of things and it is coming to fruition but we want to get better.

“In order to do that we need to get the platform right and that means getting clean sheets.

“Coming to St Johnstone any time and being offered a point and a clean sheet then I would hazard a guess that I would probably accept that.

“I don’t think we can be accused of coming here looking for a draw with the team I picked.”

Meanwhile, St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson admits he is delighted with the form of midfielder David Wotherspoon but reckons he has to discover a killer touch in front of goal.

Davidson said: “He is an intelligent footballer and he has taken on board what we have told him and he knows his role in the team.

“He is an important part of the team and I just want him to be more clinical in the final third.”
