Megginson leaves Peterhead feeling blue

-

PETERHEAD 0 COVE RANGERS 2

As is so often with Cove Rangers, it was Mitch Megginson making the difference as they saw off North East neighbours Peterhead 2- 0 at Balmoor in League 1’s newest derby.

On 33 minutes, a long goal-kick saw the Rangers striker turn a defender 25 yards from goal and unleash a powerful low effort into the bottom corner, leaving keeper Josh Rae with no chance.

Megginson was again involved for Cove’s second 10 minutes after the restart. He cut in from the left and, although Peterhead cleared initially, left-back Harry Milne latched netted from the edge of the area to seal the points.

The Blue Toon will feel hard done by as they had much of the early play and opportunities.

PARTICK THISTLE 2 AIRDRIEONIANS 1

A powder-puff header from Brian Graham and a Connor Murray shot straight at Diamonds keeper Max Currie was all the Jags could muster despite early dominance.

Instead, the killer-instinct came from the visitors who went ahead on 36 minutes when Dale Carrick was at the back post to head Sean Crighton’s cross firmly home.

Thistle were level four minutes later when Graham took a Shea Gordon pass in his stride and drilled a low shot into the corner of the net.

Graham almost completed the Jags recovery on the stroke of halftime, but his effort was saved by Currie.

Blair Spittal, who had hit woodwork moments earlier, put

Thistle ahead on the hour with a marvellous curling shot into the top corner.

Callum Fordyce, Paul Mckay and Crighton all had chances to level, but the Jags held out.

FALKIRK 1 FORFAR 1

Promotion-hunting Falkirk dropped home points for the first time in 2020 as plucky Forfar came from behind to equalise at Falkirk Stadium.

The Bairns have been imperious at their fortress-like ground, winning five league games out of five since New Year and scoring 15 goals without reply.

However, their run of clean sheets ended when Robbie Mutch’s red card midway through the second half enabled substitute

Jordan Allan to drag the visitors level from the penalty spot.

Anton Dowds had earlier fired the Bairns in front, directing a cutback low into the far corner in the 15th minute, and Forfar needed to weather intense Falkirk pressure at the start of the second period.

Gary Miller rattled the post and Blair Alston saw his effort hacked off the goalline, but The Loons survived and then hit the Bairns with that 65th-minute spot-kick.

EAST FIFE 2 MONTROSE 2

The hosts struggled to create much early on, efforts from Danny Swanson and Ross Davidson failing to trouble Aaron Lennox.

It was against the run of play when the Fifers took the lead on 25 minutes, Jack Hamilton lashing

a stunning strike beyond Lennox from the edge of the box.

Just four minutes later, Kevin Smith lofted a neat finish above the Mo goalie for 2-0.

The visitors got themselves back in the game on 34 minutes when Lewis Milne met Craig Johnston’s cross.

Graham Webster levelled things from the penalty spot with 69 minutes gone after Craig Watson was judged to have brought down Cammy Ballantyne.

Montrose finished well and had chances to win the game, the best falling to Ross Campbell, who couldn’t get a decent connection on his shot from a couple of yards out.

■ Dumbarton’s match with Clyde was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
