Difficult days for United – so who’s next?

-

Dundee United’s decision to look at wage cuts and deferrals for all members of staff is very unfortunate for all concerned.

It’s a situation, I’m sure, everyone would rather avoid.

But it’s a sign of the times, and shouldn’t come as a complete shock as clubs are shelling out tens of thousands per week with next to nothing coming in the other way due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

It just goes to show, once again, the importance of football fans.

Having them inside the ground is vital for a matchday as the players feed off of their vibrancy and backing.

It’s also important for the financial wellbeing to have fans able to attend games, and the sooner football gets clearance to allow them back in, the better.

I’m sure clubs up and down the country

will be watching the situation at Tannadice with interest as there may be a few boardrooms feeling they are also heading in that direction.

Purely from a footballing point of view, United boss Micky Mellon will be hoping that the negotiations go smoothly, and everybody buys into what the hierarchy is trying to achieve.

For many reasons, it’s vital they all reach an amicable solution to this unfortunate turn of events.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Nobby Stiles on Friday.

He was a fine footballer and a true legend of the game, serving Manchester United and England with distinction.

Nobby was also a great character with a warm personality.

The thoughts of the Dalglish household are with the Stiles family at this very sad time.
