We deserved all three points, sayswright

Kilmarnock manager Tommy Wright believes that a glaring error from referee David Munro denied Kyle Lafferty his first goal in his first start for the club – and also cost him his first win since taking charge three weeks ago.

The official insisted that home defender Kirk Broadfoot had impeded United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist before Lafferty put the ball in the net but, after watching it again, Wright claimed the man in the middle had got it all wrong.

He said: “I’m going to look upon that as a point gained, although I’m obviously disappointed we didn’t get all three because we deserved all three and only a poor refereeing decision contributed to us not getting them.

“Kyle scored a perfectly good goal when their goalkeeper palms the ball out after very little contact, if any, from Kirk Broadfoot.

“So it’s a good point, particularly with the run we’d been on. I’m really encouraged by another good performance.

“We dominated large parts of the game but Colin Doyle kept us in it at the end and saved the point. That shouldn’t take away from what was a good display but we need to learn from that because we did leave ourselves exposed to counter-attacks and, with due respect to United, that’s all they had.

“They have the quality and pace to hurt you with that and we were aware of it but, in the heat of the moment, we ended up leaving ourselves short at the back and, even with the goal we conceded, there’s a lot we can do better.”

Killie face Ross County in Dingwall on Saturday and can now move out of the relegation places with a win.

“It’s one point that we didn’t have this morning so it’s a real positive,” said Wright. “It should give the players a lift in terms of their performance against a good side.

“The character they showed as well, to go 1-0 down on the run we are on, when we were the dominant team as well, they could have folded. They didn’t. The character pleased as much as the quality we showed at times.”
