Lewandowski and Gnabry double up for leaders Bayern

-

Doubles for Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry saw BAYERN MUNICH strengthen their position at the top of the Bundesliga with a 5-1 victory over COLOGNE.

They went in front through Eric Maxim ChoupoMoting, then Lewandowski put away Leon Goretzka’s assist to make it 2-0.

Ellyes Skhiri pulled one back, but Thomas Muller set up Lewandowski to restore the hosts’ two-goal cushion. A late double by Gnabry completed a comfortable win.

Poland striker Lewandowski has now scored 28 Bundesliga goals this term – nine more than any other player in the division.

In the late game, second-top RB LEIPZIG dramatically beat BORUSSIA MONCHENGLADBACH 3-2 at home to consolidate the two-point gap between them and Bayern at the top of the table.

However, it looked to be going badly when the visitors were 2-0 in front by the 19th minute through Jonas Hofmann’s sixth-minute penalty and Marcus Thuram. On 57 minutes, Christopher Nkunku pulled one back for the home side, then Yussuf Poulsen levelled nine minutes later.

Then, in the third minute of nine added, Alexander Sorloth popped up to hit the winning goal.

At the Volkswagen Arena Stadium, most of the drama came in the final few minutes as WOLFSBURG beat visitors HERTHA BERLIN 2-0.

A Lukas Klunter own goal gave the hosts the lead on 39 minutes and it wasn’t until the 89th minute that Maxence Lacroix made the points safe.

Four minutes into time-added, Wolfsburg’s Marin Pongracic was given a red card.

This win was Wolfburg’s seventh straight league game without losing a goal.

■ With leaders Atletico Madrid playing today and Real Madrid idle until tomorrow, BARCELONA continued their recent good La Liga form with a 2-0 away victory against SEVILLE to slip into second place in La Liga.

Barca went ahead on 29 minutes when Lionel Messi set up Ousmane Dembele to open the scoring.

However, it wasn’t until five minutes to go that Messi sealed the points with a scrambled effort.

■ In French Ligue 1, PARIS SAINT GERMAIN recorded a relatively-easy 4-0 victory at DIJON.

After Moise Kean, who is on loan from Everton, opened the scoring for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the sixth minute, a penalty doubled their lead six minutes before the break.

Home defender Bersant Celina handled in the box and Kylian Mbappe converted the spot-kick. Six minutes after the interval, Mbappe netted again with a curled effort to put his side into easy street. And it was 4-0 on 82 minutes as Julian Draxler’s corner was met by Danilo Periera’s head from close range.

PSG, having played a game more, currently sit one point behind leaders Lille, who entertain Strasbourg today.
