Lewis holds on to hopes of making Euros

- By Darren Johnstone SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Lewis Morgan concedes he faces an uphill battle to force his way back into the Scotland squad for this summer’s Euros.

The former Celtic and St Mirren forward enjoyed a stunning debut campaign for Inter Miami in their inaugural MLS season last year, and was named his team’s Most Valuable Player.

However, the Covid- 19 restrictions meant that both Morgan and Sporting Kansas City playmaker Johnny Russell were overlooked by boss Steve Clarke as Scotland clinched a place at their first major finals since 1998 last November.

Morgan is also likely to be omitted from the squad for this month’s opening World Cup qualifiers against Austria, Israel and the Faroe Islands, having not played since Inter’s 2020 campaign ended in November.

And with the start of the new domestic season being pushed back until April 17, the 24- year- old – whose only two caps came under Alex Mcleish in summer 2018 – concedes time is not on his side.

Morgan, who has just signed an improved contract with David Beckham’s franchise said: “It’s a tricky situation.

“The reality is I know it’ll be difficult to forge myself in there just because our season is so far pushed back.

“If you want to get in there, you need to be performing with your club, first and foremost, so you can’t really think about the national team.

“If I can have a good start to the season and perform to the levels I’m expecting of myself, then there might be a chance to get in.”

Morgan, meanwhile, admits he had no hesitation in signing a new three-year deal with Miami, amid reported interest from Sheffield United and Reading.

He added: “In football, it’s important to try and repay clubs that show faith in you.

“Miami’s done that with me. They gave me a massive opportunity to come out here and perform. There’s always interest if you’re doing well.

“With regards to speculation, I don’t really pay too much attention to it because I knew this is where I wanted to be for this year and the coming years.

“It’s a short career, and you want to be somewhere where you feel valued, and I definitely feel like that here.”
