Dowell’s winner edges Canaries nearer the title

Norwich took another step closer to promotion when a Kieran Dowell free-kick secured a 1-0 win at Derby

The Championsh­ip leaders were dominant in the first half, but had some anxious moments in the second as County came close to snatching a point.

Goalkeeper Tim Krul made two good saves in the space of a minute, but almost gifted Derby a point in stoppage time when he lost the ball inside his area, but Graeme Shinnie could not take advantage.

Brentford kept their faint automatic promotion hopes alive with a thumping 5- 0 victory at Preston.

Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Forss scored in the first half, while Ivan Toney added a third, before subs Sergi Canos and Emiliano Marcondes both netted late on.

Goals from Alex Mowatt and Daryl Dike strengthen­ed Barnsley’s play-off push in a 2-0 win over Middlesbro­ugh.

Jamal Lowe scored twice as promotionc h a s i n g Swansea returned to form with a 3-0 win at Millwall.

Andre Ayew scored the Swans’ first goal in 500 minutes of football just before the break.

Arnaut Danjuma scored twice and made another goal as Bournemout­h moved into the play- off places with a convincing 4- 1 win at home to Coventry.

David Brooks and Dominic Solanke were also on target, with Matty James replying.

Blackburn striker Adam Armstrong struck a last- minute equaliser to snatch a 2- 2 draw at Cardiff.

A mistake from Bluebirds keeper Alex Smithies allowed Armstrong to score his first goal for the visitors after Will Vaulks gave Mick Mccarthy’s men the lead with a free-kick.

Joe Ralls looked to have sealed victory, but Armstrong completed his brace in the 90th minute.

Sheffield Wednesday were thrashed 4-1 at QPR.

Lyndon Dykes scored twice for QPR, with Stefan Johansen and Chris Willock also on the scoresheet, with Josh Windass replying.

Three goals in the last 10 minutes saw Wy c o m b e’s survival hopes suffer a major setback as Luton claimed a 3-1 win at Adams Park.

Anis Mehmeti’s firsthalf penalty had put the hosts ahead, but Josh Knight saw red before the hour mark.

A long- range free- kick from sub George Moncur and further efforts from Kazenga Lualua and Elijah Adebayo saw Luton emerge victorious.

Lukas Jutkiewicz netted both as Birmingham beat Stoke 2- 0, while there we re goalless d ra w s between Br istol City and Nottingham Forest, as well as Huddersfie­ld versus Rotherham.
