Canaries clinch return to the promised land

-

Norwich secured promotion back to the Premier League without kicking a ball ahead of last night’s match with Bournemouth.

The Canaries were aware a victory over the Cherries at Carrow Road would ensure an instant return to the top flight after they were relegated in July.

However, promotion rivals Swansea and Brentford both failed to win in their early kick- offs against Wycombe and Millwall, with the two games ending in draws, meaning Norwich’s points total of 90 can only be reached by Watford, who occupy the other automatic promotion spot in second.

Watford lost to a late James Collins penalty as they went down 1-0 at Luton.

Brentford drew 0- 0 with Millwall in their London derby, while Swansea salvaged a 2- 2 draw at Wycombe, in a result that just about secures the Chairboys an instant return to League One.

Jamal Lowe ( penalty) and sub Liam Cullen scored late on after Admiral Muskwe and Garath Mccleary had put Wycombe 2-0 ahead, with goals straight after the break.

Huddersfield all but guaranteed their survival, with Aaron Rowe and Juninho Bacuna on target in a 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

Sheffield Wednesday, though, look to be almost down as they were denied a vital win late on against 10- man Bristol City, with Tyreeq Bakinson equalising after 87 minutes, after Julian Borner had put the Owls ahead inside five minutes.

Barry Bannan had earlier missed from the spot for Wednesday, with Robins keeper Daniel Bentley saving his kick. Henri Lansbury was dismissed for giving away the penalty after 21 minutes.

Rob Dickie and L e e Wa l l a c e scored inside the first 18 minutes for 10- man QPR as they triumphed at Middlesbrough, who replied through Yannick Bolasie.

Rangers had goalkeeper Seny Dieng sent off just before the hour mark after earlier breaking his nose following a collision with Bolasie. He was given his marching orders for a foul on Boro striker Duncan Whatmore.

Preston drew 0-0 with Stoke City, with Harry Souttar and Andy Hughes both hitting the woodwork for North End, while Stoke striker Steven Fletcher had a goal ruled out for offside. Souttar also saw red for the visitors.
