You’re one of us now, Harry. Sorry

Oh dear! Now a row is raging over Prince Harry’s threat of legal action against his grandmother’s government over security.

He wants a judicial review of Home Secretary Priti Patel’s decision to strip him of his UK police protection team because he reckons it’s too dangerous for him to come home without Scotland Yard bodyguards but they’re not for hire apparently. What a mess!

Of course I understand that he has been brought up as a royal and that he is used to private security and a huge police presence whenever he would be out and about doing royal duties. But come on, he has made his choice to live overseas and lead a “normal” life with his family so a lot of the privileges that come with being royal have gone.

At the same time, he appears to be making big money from the business deals he and Meghan have set up – the Netflix shows, the companies and the forthcoming biography – so why should our police force provide security when he can pay for private protection? I know he is offering to pay Scotland Yard, but that still takes officers away from other demands and duties and they are already stretched enough. I’m sure we would all want the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to be able to come back to the UK in safety, and for the Queen and Prince Charles to see their great-grandchildren and grandchildren. They would automatically have the protection of royal security when they are with them. But if are they are no longer doing any royal engagements, they are private citizens and so should pay for private protection themselves.

Surely if they make a private trip instead of a public royal visit and can keep their plans under wraps, like the rest of us, could this hoo-ha not be avoided? It seems to me that Harry wants to have his cake and eat it.
