‘Braveheart’ calls on Brown to give up Dons armband

-

Former Scotland captain Colin Hendry yesterday launched a scathing attack on Aberdeen skipper, Scott Brown.

His broadside came in the wake of the controversial meeting of the Dons and Rangers last Tuesday night.

Ref Kevin Clancy came under fire for a series of debatable decisions, not least of which was his decision to send off Light Blues winger, Ryan Kent, for two yellow cards.

The second of those followed his challenge on Brown.

The midfielder was seen by many to have made t he most of the situation, and he exacerbated the situation

by mocking Kent as he left the Pittodrie pitch.

Now Hen dry has insisted Scott Brown should give up the team captaincy at Aberdeen –Joe Lewis is club captain – because of the midfielder’s antics against Rangers over the years.

He believes the Kent confrontation mirrored a previous incident involving Alfredo Morelos, when Brown was still a Celtic player.

Hendry reckons the 35- year- old’s behaviour is unbecoming of the armband.

Hen dry won 51 Scotland caps, and was Craig Brown’s captain at the 1998 World Cup Finals in France, the last time we qualified.

And the central defender, who became known as “Braveheart”, also won the Treble with Rangers under Dick Advocaat in 1998/99.

“That’ s not what captains do,” he said. “But he did it with Morelos at Parkhead, and he’s done it with Ryan Kent.

“Then there were the mannerisms afterwards in relation to Morelos when he get sent off, and then when Ryan Kent got sent off.

“Billy Mcneill, Paul Mcstay, Murdo Mcleod, Tom Boyd, and the greatest captain at Aberdeen, Willie Miller.

“I know it’s a different era. But would you see them do that? Would you really honestly see them do that?

“What I’m saying is if you want to do that, I’ve not got a problem.

“There’s players in the game, in the teams that I’ve played in, who will do that.

“But take the armband off, hand it to somebody else and go and then do your Robbie Savage stint.”
