Ukraine various

Vladimir Putin can be under no illusions that he surprised anyone with his attack on neighbouring Ukraine.

The eventual invasion was met with instant outrage and perhaps unsurprisingly, a flurry of podcasts.

The BBC were on the ball with Ukrainecast (BBC Sounds), a podcast, launched on the first day of the invasion. Hosts Victoria Derbyshire and Gabriel Gatehouse give daily updates on the conflict that only the BBC’S enormous resources can provide: they bring news, analysis and interviews with experts and even civilians on the ground.

Meanwhile Liza Fokht from the BBC Russian Service reporting the news from Moscow, giving us a flavour of just what the Kremlin might be thinking.

If you prefer your analysis to come from across the Atlantic, the USA have their own somewhat less well-funded version of the BBC in the form of National Public Radio (NPR), and their State Of Ukraine (Various) podcast aims to be like Ukrainecast, with daily news and interviews about the conflict.

The insightful Economist podcast The Intelligence (Various) is also providing a daily briefing on what’s happening, from its in-house team of experts to, last week, General Sir Nick Carter, the former chief of Britain’s defence staff, how urban warfare could shape the conflict.

If you’re looking for a broader historical context as to why we’re here, The Rest Is History (Acast) might help. Hosts Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook examine, in recent episode Ukraine And Russia, the origins of Ukraine and ask whether it really is distinct from its neighbour.

This is a fascinating, fractured history, from the Viking conquest to the ever-shifting landscape in the modern period.
