We can Dee it: Mcghee backs hismentostayup

- By Scott Davie SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Dundee have lost 10 league games in a row but Mark Mcghee insists they are still on course for Premiership survival.

The Dark Blues remain five points adrift of second- bottom St Johnstone after defeat at Pittodrie with three games to go.

Only a supreme optimist would give them any chance avoiding a swift return to the Championship but the Dens Park boss comes into that category.

It took a second- half Lewis Ferguson penalty to separate two sides who have largely failed to impress this season.

Dundee did create chances but came up against an Aberdeen side keeping a first clean sheet in the league this year.

However that performance was enough to convince Mcghee that they can win their last three matches and get off the foot of the table.

He said:“We lost the game as we didn’t take our chances and that’s the first time I have been able to say that since coming in.

“Tha t ’s an improvement. I ’m delighted with the performance, especially in the first half, but if you don’t take your chances you won’t win games.

“I don’t know if it is any more difficult to stay up after this game.

“I believe if we win the last three game we will be in the play-offs.

“We have shown in the last four games what we are capable of.

“We didn’t lose through football but missing chances and we have to take that into the last three games.

“We have to believe we can win the last three and see what happens. We still have positivity in the group we can stay up.

“The first half against Rangers, the last three draws and this game was everything I visualised and the way I wanted to play.”

However there wasn’t a lot of positivity from captain Charlie Adam when the veteran midfielder was substituted in 52 minutes.

It was a decision that the player clearly disagreed with but Mcghee wasn’t in the mood to discuss the situation afterwards.

“You would need to ask Charlie” he added. “He wasn’t injured it was a tactical decision. He is a player, that’s all he is.

“He’s an important player who does a fantastic job but we took him off for our reasons.”

Abe rd e e n ma n a g e r Jim Goodwin has felt hard done by with some of the penalty decisions given against his side By contrast Mcghee believes ref Willie Collum got the decision to penalise Jordan Marshall for an inadvertent trip on Jonny Hayes for the Dons spot kick.

He said:“I have seen the penalty back and it is accidental but it is still a penalty.”
