Fore! Nicky is swinging for a top-flight spot

Nicky Low aims to be Arbroath’s driving force against Inverness Caley Thistle, after teeing himself up for Tuesday’s play-off clash with some quality time on the golf course.

The 30-year-old is relishing their trip to the Highlands to take on Billy Dodds’ side in their Premiership play-off semifinal first leg after the Highlanders overcame Partick Thistle on Friday night.

The former Aberdeen, Dundee and Derry City midfielder is eyeing a dream return to the top-flight, and reckons playing a few holes of his favourite course can help Dick Campbell’s side’s quest to get off to a flier in the Highland capital.

Low said: “I think the lads getting a bit of a rest, then a free weekend, has been perfect for us.

“The last few days we’ve just trained as always. In my spare time, though, I managed to get a couple of rounds of golf with some mates – albeit I wasn’t at my best!

“It’s the ideal way just to switch off, and get a bit of down-time. It’s been a long season after all.

“To be honest, there is more pressure on Inverness than us. Their target and budget would have been for them to be up at top end of table challenging for promotion.

“For ourselves, we hit our target a while back by just staying in the Championship, so we’ve nothing to lose.”

Low watched Inverness see off Thistle, but believes the part-time Angus outfit can triumph over two legs to reach the Final.

“Inverness have quality all over park, but Shane Sutherland and Logan Chalmers are stand-outs,” he said. “They are in great form just now.

“They’re hard to play against as they move the ball about well, and are also solid at the back.

“However, we never fear anyone. We just need to put in a good performance to take back to Gayfield in front of a packed house on Friday night.

“It’s a chance for us to get a step nearer the Premiership. We wouldn’t swap it for anything.”
