Maybeishould have a word with Big Joe?

-

When I saw that Diego Maradona’s Hand of God jersey had sold for more than £7-million at auction, I was taken aback.

I just can’t see how any football top can be that valuable.

But it just goes to show what football means to some people, and what certain pieces of memorabilia can be worth.

It made me wonder just how much Joe Jordan’s Scotland jersey is worth from the World Cup qualifier against Wales at Anfield in 1977?

You know, the one with the imprint of the ball on its sleeve, worn when we got a penalty the Welsh are still disputing on the night we qualified for the World Cup Finals in Argentina!

I must ask Joe if he still has that jersey in his possession.

I’m not sure who has benefitted from the £7m sale, but it was the England midfielder, Steve Hodge, who exchanged jerseys with Maradona at the end of that

World Cup Finals tie in Mexico.

We all know the goal should never have stood.

But Maradona was an exceptional footballer, and I played against him when he played for his country at Hampden Park.

It was June, 1979, and he was just 18. He was outstanding, and scored his first goal for Argentina that day in a 3-1 victory.

At one stage in the game, he danced and dribbled his way past four or five Scotland players – probably surviving three serious assaults in the process.

He was then one-on-one with big George Wood, and gave him the eyes before hitting the woodwork. It deserved a goal.

As we all know, Maradona was an incredible talent, and it was a pleasure to share a football pitch with him that day.

Football can be so special, and give people some wonderful memories and moments when they can say: “I was there”.

Maradona provided many great times for fans all over the world during his illustrious career.
