‘We are dead on our feet,’ says Lions defender

Defender Jack Fitzwater admitted after yesterday’s last-minute equaliser that Livi’s players are “dead on our feet” at the end of a gruelling Premiership campaign.

With two games remaining this week, the West Lothian club look set to finish in a highly respectable seventh position.

But the top-six was in their grasp until they conceded another late equaliser against Motherwell last month.

“We were absolutely devastated after the Motherwell game,” said Fitzwater.

“After that, we really wanted to win our last five games in the bottom six. We’ve won two and now drawn this one, with two games still to play.

“It’s been a very positive season for us, but we want to finish on a high.

“The desire and endeavour from the players is still there, but we’re dead on our feet.

“We didn’t play anywhere near our best today – I don’t know why – but we deserved a draw on the balance of play.

“St Johnstone came here with a game plan and they played it well.”

Saints’ 2014 Cup-winning hero Stevie May made a dramatic return to the team yesterday and produced a typically energetic display in attack.

“This club means a lot to me. I’m still fit and raring to go,” he said.

“I’ve been working hard in training, so it was good to get a chance to come in the team again.”

Saints now face a relegation play-off against either Arbroath or Inverness Caley Thistle, but May pointed out: “We’re in a far better place and in a far more positive frame of mind than we were two months ago.

“We wanted to get ourselves off the bottom of the table.

“We’ve worked hard to do that and now we need to regroup and go again.

“We’ve never been in this situation before at the end of a season, but we need to do everything we can all over the pitch to try to stay in this league.”
