First Minister hails Scotland’s carers

-

The first minister has hailed carers and added that the pandemic has shone a new light on their crucial work.

Nicola Sturgeon said: “I will never be able to express just how grateful I am for the work of our paid and unpaid carers, particularly over the course of the last two-and-a-half years. We know that unpaid caring roles are disproportionately carried out by women and that’s only been exacerbated by the pandemic.

“However, the pandemic shone a light on society’s carers, whether paid or unpaid, and brought a newfound recognition and appreciation of the vital work that they do.”

She was speaking as an exhibition opens in her constituency celebrating women who worked as carers and in healthcare during the pandemic.

Woven In Govan, at the Kinning Park Complex, sees artwork created in response to female stories and voices, and has been presented in conjunction with an organisation based out of wartorn Mariupol in Ukraine.

The project’s aim is to provide a platform for people to hear the stories of women’s care burden during the Covid pandemic.

Sturgeon, MSP for Glasgow Southside, said: “I am, as ever, so proud of the community I represent for taking up these issues and bringing this exhibition together.”

The exhibition runs until July 21.
