Wimbledon bad boy hit with £5k fine
“Two hours after ending Bjorn Borg’s five-year reign as king of Wimbledon, John Mcenroe was penalised again for his hasty temper,” reported The Post on one of the tennis star’s now-famous on-court rants.
“The tournament committee recommend he be fined £5,000 as punishment for a row during his semi-final with Australian Rod Frawley.
“The 22- year- old has already been fined a total of £ 1,125 for a series of on- court incidents and a further £ 1,250 fine has been recommended.
“He has 14 days in which to appeal against the fines he has not yet paid. But against all this, he receives £ 21,600 for yesterday’s win to add to the £ 4,535 share of the prize money for his win in the men’s doubles with Peter Fleming.
“He can also expect to receive one million dollars’ worth of sponsorships.”
