At the behest of coach, Jock Wallace, they headed for Gullane to spends hours during preseason running up and down sand dunes.

“Murder Hill” was a particular favourite, and if you didn’t throw up, you weren’t doing it properly.

This is Colin Jackson enduring another climb under the watchful eye of Wallace, who came in for some scorn at the time.

Years later, however, the likes of Sandy Jardine, who played until he was nearly 40, put the longevity of their careers down to their Gullane grounding.
