Mystery injury delays £4.5m Ramsay’s debut for Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that a mystery injury, discovered during Calvin Ramsay’s medical, will prevent the 18-year-old right-back from making his debut this week.

Last season’s FA Cup and League Cup winners have travelled to Bangkok, where they will face Manchester United on Tuesday.

And, although the Scotland Under-21 star flew to Thailand with the rest of the first-team squad yesterday, the German revealed that the issue could cause the £4.5-million signing from Aberdeen serious concern later in his career if it isn’t dealt with now.

“Unfortunately, Calvin is not training with us at the moment – he has a little injury,” said Klopp.

“Nobody knew about it until we found it when he did his medical check.

“Until now, he has had no problems. But the medical department tells us if we don’t take care of that now, he will have a problem in the future.

“When you are that young then, of course, he has a long career ahead of him.

“We are very responsible in these moments, so he hasn’t yet trained with the team.

“But Calvin is doing a lot of fitness work. It will not take too long, I think.

“So I didn’t see him yet in training, but everything we saw about him, and heard about him, he’s a fantastic boy.

“And what a player he is. What he did for Aberdeen last year was absolutely exceptional in his age group.

“You know the things we need from a full-back, and he is as close as it gets to the things we want. And he’s still a kid.

“So we really expect a lot from him in the long term.”

Ramsay was brought to Anfield as the understudy to England’s Trent Alexander-arnold, but Klopp wants competition for places in every position.
