Lowry poised to get a chance with Under-21s
Scot Gemmill is likely to hand an Under-21 debut to Rangers midfielder Alex Lowry in the challenge match against Iceland at Fir Park later this month.
The 19-year-old was included in the summer double-header against Belgium and Denmark, but failed to get off the bench.
Lowry scored on his Light Blues debut against Stirling Albion in the Scottish Cup back in January and found the net again in the final Premiership game of last season at Tynecastle.
A serious injury in a Lowland League game against Dumbarton in August set him back, but proof of his recovery came when he was introduced as a substitute in the Champions League tie against Ajax at Ibrox last Tuesday.
Under-21 boss Gemmill said: “Alex can influence games in an attacking manner. He sees passes and can execute them.
“He can beat his man and is a goal threat. These are all attributes that are in keeping with top players.
“Alex is still right on the edge where he has played for the first team, but he’s obviously still playing games for the B team as well.
“We had him involved in the summer with us. He didn’t get any minutes on the pitch against Belgium and Denmark. But he played very well for the Scotland Under-19s last year.
“It’s really exciting to get him back involved after his injury.
“There will be a development in Alex that we haven’t seen in some of the players for a while.
“That’s whether it’s physical – taller, stronger, fitter – or a mentality thing and being more mature.
“It’s going to be really interesting to see the improvement of all the players, on and off the pitch, to see how they’re developing as young people.”
The match against Iceland takes place on Thursday, November 17
