Sons are No 1, scoring four to go five clear

-

ELGIN CITY 0 DUMBARTON 4

Dumbarton moved five points clear at the top of the league with a comfortable win over hosts Elgin.

The home side threatened first and Sons keeper Brett Long made a superb double save to deny Kane Hester and Russell Dingwall.

The opening goal arrived for Dumbarton on 25 minutes when good work on the right by Kalvin Orsi was finished off by Ross Maclean.

Another counter-attack seven minutes after the break saw Gregg Wylde break away down the left and beat two men before firing home Sons’ second.

Elgin could not break down the visitors, with top scorer Hester unable to get a chance to add to his 20-goal tally for the campaign.

Victory was secured on 74 minutes when an Orsi cross fell to Aron Lynas and his thunderous drive took a deflection and beat keeper Tom Mchale all ends up.

The cherry on the cake for the away side was provided by sub Ryan Wallace, who drilled in a low effort from the edge of the box to wrap up the three points.

FORFAR ATHLETIC 1 BONNYRIGG ROSE 1

Life as Forfar manager almost got off to the perfect start for Ray Mckinnon, but his side conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to Bonnyrigg Rose.

Matty Aitken had the only real chance of a quiet first half. His header looked destined for the net, but Rose captain Jonathan Stewart was there to knock it away.

A tight game was brought to life in scintillating fashion 14 minutes from time. A brilliant team move resulted in Jaden Ferguson receiving the ball 12 yards out. The Hearts loanee beat his man and slotted a composed finish into the bottom corner to score his first for the club and the first of Forfar’s new regime.

The Loons looked to be seeing the game out comfortably, but some pinball in the box deep into time-added led to George Hunter finding time to take a touch and smash in to the top corner, sparking bedlam amongst the away fans.

The point sees the Athies remain at the bottom of the table, while the Rosey Posey sit just two points above their relegation rivals.

EAST FIFE 2 ALBION ROVERS 3

There was drama early in the game as East Fife’s Aaron Steele was sent off just six minutes in after the referee ruled he had kicked an opposition player in the head.

Despite being a man short, the Fifers opened the scoring, with loanee Joao Balde firing home from a cross.

Albion answered back, though ,and equalised shortly after through Charlie Reilly following a good passage of play.

Before the break, Rovers had turned the game on its head, making it 2-1, when Blair Malcolm bundled the ball over the line after a stramash in the box.

The hosts were the better side in the second half, and Balde scored another excellent goal from a cross to bring the game level.

Albion won the game with a lastminute penalty after Reilly was fouled in the box, and the striker dusted himself down to net the spot-kick

STRANRAER 3 STENHOUSEMUIR 2

The hosts broke the deadlock on 17 minutes when they capitalised on Conor Brennan’s poor clearance. James Hilton still had plenty to do, but curled a stunning lob home from fully 40 yards.

The Blues doubled their advantage just over 10 minutes before the interval when Dean Hawkshaw’s cross into the box was not cleared and Matty Grant fired home.

However, Stenhousemuir halved the deficit before the break when Matty Yates beat goalkeeper Luke Scullion to flick home.

Two big talking points came in the space of 60 seconds midway through the second half.

Kyle Girvan was shown a straight red card after a fierce tackle in the centre circle, with Stranraer manager Jamie Hamill also sent off.

However, Stranraer immediately went up the park and captain Grant Gallagher slid the ball in from close range.

Substitute Tom Orr pulled one back for Stenhousemuir on 83 minutes.

STIRLING ALBION 0 ANNAN ATHLETIC 2

Annan won away for the second week in a row to inflict a first home defeat of the season on Darren Young’s team.

The Binos had left-back Cammy Clark sent off against his former club as they slipped five points behind leaders Dumbarton.

Rob Mccartney missed an early opportunity for the visitors in a first half of few chances, then Clark saw red in 38 minutes for a two-footed tackle on Cammy Williamson.

Stirling had a great chance to take the lead in 62 minutes when Kai Fotheringham set up Jack Leitch, but the midfielder sent his shot just wide.

Annan went ahead in 71 minutes when top scorer Tommy Goss pounced from close range after keeper Blair Currie had fumbled the ball following a near-post corner.

Albion pushed for an equaliser, but Peter Murphy’s men sealed the win in the sixth minute of time-added when he got on the end of a long ball and fired past Currie.
