Beyond the pale, beneath contempt

-

Just how much does this country have to put up with before something snaps?

After all that he did and didn’t do, Boris Johnson thinks it’s perfectly acceptable to nominate his dad for a knighthood and we all say what a disgrace and let him get away with it. What kind of two-bob, corrupt country is this? The prime minister should be saying it’s not on and the King should be saying he won’t do it. And if they don’t, we should.

Johnson went beyond the pale so long ago that he thinks he can literally do what he wants and treat the whole country like fools. He is contemptible and his father is clearly as bad for letting him do it.

Meanwhile, France is on the streets because the government wants to lift the pension age to 64. Maybe we need to be a little more French about things.

ANTI-SNP bores

The letters page seems to have the same anti-snp readers on rotation.

There are many SNP voters in Scotland (hence the repeated election wins) but they are not fairly represented in the Scottish media, so much so they have had to produce their own newspaper. It would be nice to see a bit of balance from time to time.

A rumpus on TV

The big TV debate between the three SNP candidates was a shocker. If you had missed the start, you would never have guessed they were on the same side. It was good telly but if I was in the SNP, I’d be wondering what on earth is going on.

Sandra Elliot, Peebles Think of the elderly

I read parking fines are going up and the councils are using more and more apps to pay for street parking. But what about old people who don’t even have smartphones, never mind knowing how to use apps. My mum is still smart as a whip but she wouldn’t know where to start. It’s not fair and we need to start thinking about them more. Chris Billigan, by email

Deeply flawed

If I may be permitted, I wish to point out that the description for the picture of the diver and the turtle is incorrect (Snapshot, last week).

This girl is not a scuba diver. That requires the use of SCUBA gear which she is clearly not wearing. Judging by the type of fins she is wearing and the weight belt around her waist, she is a free diver, someone who can dive to considerable depths on a single lungful of air, holding her breath for several minutes. This is a much rarer creature.

Dave Aitken, by email A play for every day

I just wanted to say that I went to A

Play, A Pie And A Pint at Oran Mor in Glasgow and couldn’t believe I had never been before.

We got there half an hour early and could hardly get a seat. The play was brilliant, a musical about allotments and murder (The Worm That Turned). The cast were great, the pie was tasty and I haven’t had a better day for long enough. Can’t recommend it enough.
