Breathless battle puts women back in Victorian era

-

Being a woman in the Victorian era was really, really tough. Imagine wearing corsets so tight they rearranged your internal organs? It must have been hell.

What a relief for everyone when they fell out of fashion and the world moved on. (Pretty much how I felt when drainpipe trousers stopped being trendy, although, who thought it would be a good idea to bring them back as skinny jeans?)

Having said that, watching the parade of stars at the Met Gala, the “biggest night in fashion” I began to wonder if we actually had moved on.

Kim Kardashian had squeezed into a metallic corseted dress so tight, her waist looked freakishly tiny. How did she even breathe? It wasn’t just her, other female guests were so compromised by their frocks they had to be carried up the famous red carpeted stairs by groups of security guards. Quite a few actresses were semi naked and rapper Doja Cat wore a wet T-shirt.

Meanwhile, the men walked briskly into the event in their enviably comfy and practical outfits. I found it all intensely depressing.

Why do women have to wear such ridiculous clothes in the name of art and haute couture? It makes them look like cartoon characters. If this is female empowerment, I’ll give it a miss.
