10 TOP TEAM-MATES

Joe Gilroy Ex-Queen’s Park, Montrose, Clyde, Fulham & Dundee.

- BRIAN FOWLIE

ALLY DONALDSON

A TALL, athletic goalkeeper who controlled his area superbly. Ally was a great shot-stopper who used the ball quickly and accurately.

GEORGE COHEN

WORLD Cup winner with England in 1966. A strong tackler and always willing to charge up the wing and cross into the box.

JOHN DEMPSEY

REPUBLIC of Ireland internationalist who was strong in the air and a tight marker. A defender but he could also play at centre-forward.

DOUG HOUSTON

SUCH an elegant player. A good reader of the game – calm and controlled – Doug could start attacks from deep with excellent passing.

EDDIE MULHERRON

AN uncompromising defender for Clyde. Strong in the tackle and also liked to go forward. A move to Celtic was on but he broke his leg against Dundee United and it was off.

JOHN McHUGH

AN excellent marker and strong in the tackle. Unlucky not to pick up a full Scotland cap.

JOHNNY HAYNES

THE finest passer the game has ever seen. He spent his whole career at Fulham, turning down huge transfers to Milan, Spurs and many others.

JOCKY SCOTT

BEGAN as a wide forward but developed into an excellent midfield player. He was quick, strong, a great dribbler and accurate passer.

JOE GILROY

I COULD fill in anywhere along the forward line and midfield. I ended up playing every outfield position for Highlands Park in South Africa and even in goal once for the reserves. Never a great player but a bit better than average.

ALLAN CLARKE

CALLED “Sniffer” due to his amazing goalscoring ability. Great in the air and quick over 10 yards.

LES BARRETT

NEARLY 500 games for Fulham. A flying winger, he was so quick but also had excellent close control and was an accurate crosser.
