THE PANCAKE PLACE, REFORM ST, DUNDEE

-

1 LOCATION

A stone’s throw from Dundee’s City Square and concert venue the Caird Hall, and a three-minute walk from the new waterfront development and V&A Museum.

2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Slightly tired interior but clean, warm and busy.

3 SERVICE

A friendly, efficient waitress took our order promptly and brought crayons and a colouring sheet for our wee one. An average wait time for food, which showed it was freshly prepared.

4 MENU

Much more than just pancakes. The menu is huge and includes breakfasts, starters, “wee plates” and light bites, soups, traditional main courses, paninis, baked potatoes, pasta and burgers. There are savoury pancakes – homemade chilli, chicken, ham and lots more. But the sweet selection is the star of the show. We’d challenge any hardened diner to read the menu and not succumb to the charms of banoffee, rocky road, toffee apple or raspberry Pavlova stackers. Piles of freshly-made pancakes smothered with your choice of fruit, sauces, marshmallows, meringue, cream and the likes. Purists can try the pizza-sized Canadian served with maple syrup or share the American – three golden-syrup-drizzled delights.

5 TASTE

The delicious lentil soup was just like gran would make. And the toasted baguettes (tuna melt and Cajun chicken) were full of flavour. The kids’ mac ’n’ cheese was a hit, as was the toffee sauce pancake for afters. One of our party even managed a Cornish – a huge syrupy, ice-cream covered joy! The rest of us could only manage “spoonsize” (smaller, but still generous) with butter and jam. Every bite was scrumptious.

6 PRICE

At £8-£10 for a main and £7 for large pancakes, our bill came in around £55 for four. But we were full for the day!

7 AMBIENCE

Basic cafe-style setting with a mix of tables and booths. Buzzing with chat from diners of all ages.

8 SOMETHING SPECIAL

The name says it all – pancake perfection!

9 TOILETS

Not great – in need of light and renovation.

10 VERDICT

A Dundee delight. 14/20
