Oh, not a beautiful warnin’ as bomb scare cancels show
An amateur theatre group is counting the cost of a Fife theatre being sealed off by police following reports of a “suspicious communication”.
The 616-seat Rothes Hall in Glenrothes was evacuated at lunchtime on Friday following what is believed to have been a bomb hoax. The evening performance of Oklahoma! by the Glenrothes Amateur Musical Association (GAMA) was also cancelled.
More than 300 customers had to be refunded.
It is believed the scare cost the local theatre group about £5,000.
“A written threat was found inside a public area within the building,” GAMA president Glen Mcgill told The Sunday Post.
“The note contained a threat to the building and it had to be taken seriously.
“It turned out to be a very expensive hoax for us as we had sold more than 300 tickets.
“One of the cast even had a relative travel all the way from Kent for the performance only to find it had been cancelled.”
The show had gone down a storm with audiences all last week, with many praising the cast for their performances of the musical’s famous tunes like Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’ and I Cain’t Say No.
Police Scotland said the force was alerted shortly before 2pm. They added: “Police in Fife were called to premises in the centre of Glenrothes following a report of a suspicious communication.”
