Chain-smoking Daisy Gamble (Barbra Streisand) goes under hypnosis only to discover she is the reincarnation of a 19th Century seductress. Adapted from Alan Jay Lerner’s stage play, the musical comedy was originally intended to be a sprawling, three-hour extravaganza. But executives eventually asked director Vincente Minnelli to prune the running time to a more realistic 129 minutes.
