ROSSO, 25 MAIN STREET, BOTHWELL
1 LOCATION
Right in the heart of busy Bothwell, this lovely wee village bistro is just a short walk from the stunning Bothwell Castle.
2 first Impressions
Warm and cosy. It’s a small restaurant with only a handful of tables, but there’s ample space so you don’t feel claustrophobic. It was busy, but our attentive waitress was lovely from the outset, showing us to a comfortable booth by the window and talking us through the specials. The wine crate wall is an interesting focal point.
3 service
Welcoming and friendly. Our drinks and food were delivered promptly, but with plenty of time to digest in between courses.
4 menu
Straightforward, freshly cooked Italian food. From pizza and pasta to soups, salads and paninos, it’s simple but there is plenty of choice. The salmon spiked with vodka offers something a little quirky. Breakfasts look good, too – and are served until 2pm weekends and bank holidays.
5 TASTE
Absolutely delicious. We plumped for the potato and leek soup and BLT panino specials which were amazing, and the penne con salsiccia – pasta with spicy Italian sausage and spring onions in a tomato-ey, creamy sauce. Belissimo!
6 price
At just under £30 for coffees, mains and desserts for two, it was decent. The pasta portion was so large we had half boxed up to take home.
7 Ambience
The soft red and black furnishings and dim lighting certainly add to the warm, cosy – and relaxed atmosphere. The soft, enchanting music in the background was just at the right volume.
8 something SPECIAL
The desserts! From chocolate fudge cake and cheesecake of the day to sundaes topped with caramel and tablet, or meringue and berries there’s such a variety, and that’s before you catch a glimpse of the cabinet with tray bakes galore.
9 TOILETS
Spacious, gorgeously scented and pristine clean.
10 verdict
Delizioso! 17/20
