Collum kops it from irate Gerrard after red

Steven Gerrard branded referee Willie Collum “embarrassing” after the whistler’s decision to send off Rangers’ Daniel Candeias.

And the Ibrox manger called for supporters throwing missiles to be given a lifetime ban after striker Alfredo Morelos was struck by an object at the Simple Digital Arena.

Gerrard watched footage post-match of Candeias being given a second yellow card in the 92nd minute after being on the receiving end of a jab from St Mirren defender Anton Ferdinand.

The player looked bemused by the decision to send him packing, and his boss was anger by the decision.

Gerrard said: “So Daniel gets a yellow card for that! Come on, lads. Be serious.

“What does he get a yellow card for? The second yellow card is embarrassing. It’s embarrassing. There is your evidence, that’s what you’re dealing with. “There was a coming together with Anton Ferdinand, and he doesn’t do anything wrong other than trying to get the man off. It’s not a yellow card, not in my book.”

Rangers will be unable to appeal the decision as only yellow cards for simulation or a case of mistaken identity can be reversed.

Gerrard went on: “Daniel deserved his first yellow card. He was emotional and got carried away after scoring a goal.

“I can understand it because we had worked so hard for the breakthrough.” There was an unsavoury incident when Morelos was hit on the stomach by an object – which looked like a coin – thrown from the St Mirren fans as he celebrated scoring Rangers’ second.

It came three days after Hibs boss Neil Lennon was struck by a coin at Tynecastle.

Gerrard said: “At any stadium in the world, we don’t want to see things getting thrown onto the pitch. And I say that to all my rivals out there as well.

“It’s not right to throw things from the crowd. It’s not acceptable in any sport.

“Is it going to have to take someone’s eye to come out, or someone to be badly hurt from an object, for us to make it stop?

“These people shouldn’t be at a football match. You just ban them forever. It’s that simple. Then it will stop. If it gets ignored, then it will go on and on.

“Alfredo didn’t mention it. But he doesn’t. He gets on with it and just wants to play football. He’s been called up for Colombia and I think he’s been excellent. He deserved his goal.”
