Sixty years of inching ahead
It’s not just busts that have gotten bigger – in the last 60 years we’ve gained in height, have larger feet, and added a few inches to our waistlines.
According to lingerie brand Bluebella, in 1957 the average woman in the UK was only 5ft 2ins tall, weighed 9st 10lbs, wore size three shoes, and size 12 dresses. Today, Miss Average is 5ft 5ins and weighs 11 stone, while her feet are size six, and her dress size has grown to a curvy 16. Thankfully, we’re not still taking home the average £10 a week earned by those working in the 1950s.
