Jones: We only have ourselves to blame

-

“It was our own fault.” Huw Jones had no hesitation in assigning blame for Scotland’s narrow defeat to South Africa.

The centre said: “That was massively disappointing. We knew what they’d bring and I felt we dealt with that pretty well, their physicality and kicking game, and we went in at the break with the scores pretty close

“The two tries we let in in the first half were pretty soft, just mistakes of ours and they finished them off well.

“Second half, the game slowed down quite a lot, particularly in the last 20, which doesn’t really suit us, we want to speed it up as much as we can. “They had us at the breakdown quite a few times so it’s a disappointing loss but we know that we left a lot of chances out there.

“It’s frustrating. Every time we seemed to make headway, even when we were scoring points, they’d come back and then we exit poorly or give a penalty away in our own half, or get into their half and not finish off a good chance.” Jones was one of Scotland’s better performers, making some good breaks and creating their first try for Peter Horne, after being the subject of criticism for a poor defensive display in Cardiff a fortnight ago. He admitted: “For any professional player, having a game like that down in Cardiff, you really take a knock to your confidence.

“A couple of the older heads in the dressing room said it’s not the end of the world, but I took a hit for that and I was chuffed to be told I was back in the team for this week, and just wanted to put in a good performance.”
