Gareth Mcauley has revealed he turned down the chance to stay in England’s Premier League to join Rangers.

The Northern Ireland centre-half celebrates his 39th birthday in 10 days but has been re-energised by life at Ibrox. His agent thought he was mad to turn down offers from EPL clubs, but the player was determined to wait for an offer from the Light Blues.

Finally winning a trophy would be a perfect climax to his career, and he believes that can happen with Steven Gerrard’s side.

He signed in September and joining his boyhood idols has been everything he hoped for.

“There was a whisper at the end of last season that it might be a possibilit­y,” he said. “Throughout the summer, I was knocking things back waiting to see if it could happen

“It was a calculated risk but, no disrespect to the other clubs, this is the one I wanted.

“My agents couldn’t really believe it. But Rangers are a massive club, a worldfamou­s club, the most successful club.

“I couldn’t think of anywhere better to come and play football. “Winning something here is my focus. My family is down south, so I am totally focused on doing that, and helping the club any way I can.
