Saint Adam’s wonder goal breaks Hearts

- By Ian Steven SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

St Mirren striker Adam Hammill is hardly a stranger to the sensational – he famously notched a wonder goal at Wembley in a League One playoff final for Barnsely against Millwall.

But the Liverpudlian admitted he may have surpassed himself at New St Mirren Park.

Hearts keeper Zdenek Zlamal admitted after the match that he had no chance of stopping Hammill’s 45-yard half-volley with the Saint declaring he might well have notched the best goal of his career.

He said: “It is up there as the best goal I have scored, definitely.

“The space just opened up and in my head, for some reason, I knew if I took the volley, the lights might cause havoc with the keeper looking up.

“Fortunately, today, it went in the back of the net.

“You can try about 50 times and it can go in Row Z or over the stand. It was just that one that went in today.” Hammill admitted that as elegant as his first goal was, his second strike was the more pertinent as it sealed the first win of the season for new manager Oran Kearney.

“I think the second goal was really important. It was vital,” he said. “When you score, you are at your most vulnerable.

“You tend to concede chances or goals.

“To get that second goal so soon after, it put us firmly ahead. It was something to hang on to.

“We knew that we could have them on the break and we could have got a third. “We restricted them to very few chances.

“The last few home performances have been really positive.

“We had it in our head today that we wanted to go out and send a message.

“I am just delighted that we delivered it. It is great to send the fans home happy. “I think you can see how much it meant to the players and staff at the end. “We wanted to show them the appreciation for the support they have given us.

“All the fans want is for the players to show willingness, to fight for the shirt and we did that regardless.”
