Jack’s just the lad to deliver Carlisle win

- By Reg Moore SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Barrys Jack is a regular round Carlisle, and his return today coincides with the final of a hugely successful twomile hurdle series.

Indeed, it takes the eight-year-old back to the scene of his last victory at the Cumbrian track in October last year, off a mark of 107. That win rattled up a hat-trick for Brian Ellison’s handicapper and he has dropped to the exact same rating for this afternoon’s mission.

This year, however, he has the assistance of 7lb-claimer, Danny Mcmenamin, who is with Nicky Richards and whose claim is a gift.

Don Cantillon makes the long trip north from Newmarket, bringing Huntsmans Jog back to the scene of some promise in a bumper three weeks ago. He was fourth, beaten seven-and-ahalf lengths by the wellbacked IK Brunel, having been outpaced early but stayed on gamely in the straight. That was on the soft ground he will encounter today and, in an open event, Cantillon’s trek with one runner has a chance.

Chicoria is bang in form for Tristan Davidson in staying handicap hurdles, and champion jockey Richard Johnson is booked to ride.

The eight-year-old has form on testing ground and steps back up to three miles today, after wins at Ayr and Kelso in the spring.
