New Lanark quarry row
Campaigners are worried about plans to extend a quarry near one of Scotland’s only world heritage sites.
A decision by the Scottish government is expected soon about the proposal by Mexican multinational Cemex to expand into protected land near the banks of the Falls of Clyde close to New Lanark. Thousands of people have already written to the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon urging her to scrap the proposal.
Critics are concerned that it will affect the Falls of Clyde, destroying heritage and ruining the area for tourists.
This argument started in 2012 when Cemex first submitted its application.
