FROZEN IN TIME

Rangers make the journey to the Austrian capital to face Rapid Vienna this Thursday in their do-ordie final Europa League group tie. The Ibrox men made the same journey 85 years ago in a return friendly match against the Austrians. Rapid ran out 4-3 winners that day. These days, travel between Scotland and Austria is simple. The same could not be said for when the Viennese side had visited Govan a few months earlier for the first match between the sides. Nowadays, it is no more than a few hours on a team bus and plane, dressed in comfortable track suits. Far from the case back then, as the Austrian side arrived into London’s Victoria Station after travelling through Europe, before setting off north to Glasgow, where the Gers held the visitors to a 3-3 draw in front of 56,000 fans.
