Academics: Duchess changing her tune

-

Meghan Markle has toned down her feminist statements since marrying Prince Harry and undergone a “conservative, upper-class makeover,” an academic study claims.

The Duchess of Sussex was a vocal advocate for women’s rights before she met Harry, but is rapidly turning into little more than a traditional royal woman, according to researchers who have analysed how she has changed.

The criticisms are contained in an academic paper published by Celebrity Studies, a journal that “focuses on the critical exploration of celebrity, stardom and fame”.

The authors, Laura Clancy, of Lancaster University, and Hannah Yelin, of Oxford Brookes University, point out that Miss Markle was a vocal advocate for women’s rights before she met Harry, but say her tone has now changed.

They said: “She has quit her acting career, closed down her popular blog and social media accounts for all her online activity to be syphoned through Kensington Palace.”

The palace declined to comment, but it is understood that the duchess’s first royal patronages, to be announced next year, will champion many causes relating to female empowerment.
