Explosive on beach
A section of a Scottish beach was cordoned off yesterday while a controlled explosion was carried out on an old military device.
The object, which is believed to have been a bomb, mine or torpedo, was found on Irvine beach in Ayrshire on Friday morning, halfway between Irvine and Barassie.
The Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team sent a photo of the item to the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team at Faslane Naval Base in Helensburgh but they were unable to dispose of it until the next day due to tide times. Ardrosan Coastguard Rescue said yesterday: “Following a final assessment of the site by the Royal Navy, the cordon has been lifted.”
