Author David Nicholls began adapting his novel for the big screen before the book had even been released in the US.

Surprisingly, he initially struggled to interest movie studios in the story which follows the lives of two graduates on the same date, July 15, every year for two decades. Luckily, however, Anne Hathaway read the novel, loved it and threw her weight behind the adaptation.

Nicholls said: “She really took a deep breath and got the film made.”

Filming took place in Edinburgh, where the characters first met, in August 2010.
